The book : Scarce and Nice First edition of this book on Isle of the Massacre in the St. Lawrence River -- landlocked at the eastern end of Parc national du Bic, in the sector of the same name, in Rimouski. This small island territory of 400 m in length is entirely formed of rocks, except in its eastern part, where we discover a shale outcrop. The extermination of a group of Amerindians is at the origin of its name. Oral tradition indeed reports that Abenakis and Micmacs returning by the Trois Pistoles river with Iroquoises they had captured went to hide in this island. The Iroquois having followed them from afar, and seeing their enemies being buried in a cave on this island, massacred them and freed their wives. In the Relation of his second voyage (1535-1536), Jacques Cartier alludes to these events which, according to the testimony of the Amerindian chief Donnacona, could have taken place in 1534 or a few years earlier.
