Binding: Attractive and very good full calf leather binding with a gothic-arched cathedral design on both covers (hinges fine, overall slightly scuffed and worn - as shown)  under a removable protective mylar cover. All edges are gilt.
Content: Very good content (tight and clean, light foxing, toning, or staining - as shown, notes and names of a previous owner on the first blank pages - as shown, small stamp of an old bookseller of La Rochelle on the first endpaper - as shown, small tear on the outer margin of the frontispiece illustration nicely repaired at the verso by a previous owner - as shown).

His name means "Thomas of Kempen", Kempen being his hometown.

The illustrator: Émile Jean-Horace Vernet (30 June 1789 – 17 January 1863), more commonly known as simply Horace Vernet, was a French painter of battles, portraits, and Orientalist subjects.
