Binding: Attractive and very good full calf leather binding with gilt decorations on covers and spine (hinges fine, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. All edges gilt.
Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, some foxing or staining mainly on preliminary and last pages - as shown, name of a previous owner on the second blank page - as shown). 
Illustrations: Complete with the frontispiece and the extra finely hand-colored lithographs of bouquets and roses. 

The book: Scarce and attractive Victorian Floriography book in a beautiful binding.

The author: Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (October 24, 1788 – April 30, 1879) was an American writer, activist, and editor of Godey's Lady's Book. She was the author of the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Hale famously campaigned for the creation of the American holiday known as Thanksgiving, and for the completion of the Bunker Hill Monument.
