The book : Beautiful attractive first english edition of this classic "Victorian" publication on natural history by Michelet. The first of his series of four books: L'Oiseau (The Bird), 1856; L'Insecte (The Insect), 1857; La Mer (The Sea),1861; and La Montagne (The Mountain), 1868. In L'Oiseau (The Bird), the subject of natural history was a new subject with Michelet to which his wife introduced him, it is treated, not from the point of view of mere science, nor from that of sentiment, but from that of the author's fervent pantheism... Rare in the original blue variant of the binding!

The author: Jules Michelet (21 August 1798 – 9 February 1874) was a French historian. He was born in Paris to a family with Huguenot traditions.
