Binding: Attractive, near fine, and beautiful binding made by Root & Son (London) bindery in dark blue full morocco leather with gilt borders, beautiful gilt and red stamped roses within spine panels with brown leather squares for title and author's name, gilt dentelles along turn-ins (hinges fine) under a protective removable mylar cover. All edges gilt.  An exquisite and rare Root & Son binding!
Content: Near fine content (bright, tight and clean - as shown, original ribbon bookmark, original pictorial covers and spine bound in at back -  as shown). 
Illustrations: Complete with all the 60 beautiful illustrations by Charles Doyle.


The book: Rare First edition of this imaginary travel in the Alice in Wonderland-style children's fantasy, published pseudonymously by J.H.A. Macdonald, then Solicitor-General of Scotland (he would become a Queen's Counsel in 1880 a Privy Counsellor in 1885). Illustrated by Charles Doyle, father of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In a wonderful Root & Son binding!

The illustrator: Charles Altamont Doyle (25 March 1832 – 10 October 1893) was an illustrator, watercolorist and civil servant. A member of an artistic family, he is remembered today primarily for being the father of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes.

The author: Sir John Hay Athole Macdonald, Lord Kingsburgh, KCB, PC, PRSSA, FRS, FRSE (27 December 1836 – 9 May 1919) was a Scottish Conservative Party politician and later a judge.
