Binding: Attractive and very good decorated original full-cloth binding with bright gilt decorative medallion of "Captain January" and "Star" the young girl on the upper right of the front cover (hinges fine, slightly worn and scuffed - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. Upper edge gilt.
Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, rare light foxing or staining - as shown). 
Illustrations: Profusely and nicely illustrated by Frank Thayer Merrill.

The book: Rare and attractive edition of Captain January -- an 1891 children's novel, written by Laura E. Richards. It was later adapted into two films, the 1924 silent film Captain January, starring Baby Peggy and the 1936 musical film Captain January, starring Shirley Temple. The story is about a lighthouse keeper and his little girl, Star.

The author: Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards (February 27, 1850 – January 14, 1943) was an American writer. She wrote more than 90 books including biographies, poetry, and several for children. One well-known children's poem is her literary nonsense verse "Eletelephony".

The illustrator: Frank Thayer Merrill (December 14, 1848 – October 12, 1936) was an American artist and illustrator. He is best known for his drawings for the first illustrated edition of Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women, published in 1880. Over a five-decade career, he illustrated a wide variety of works for adults and children.
