The Book: This 1674 Venetian edition of Polydori Apollinis Flosculi is a scarce collection of Latin and vernacular epigrams, distichs, and moral verses compiled by Benedetto Perazzo, a Venetian poet. Dedicated to Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Ursino, the work blends classical poetic forms with contemporary Christian reflections, as evidenced by the author’s final “Protesta,” where he defends the orthodoxy of his imagery. Its allegorical frontispiece and vellum binding embody the Venetian printing tradition of the late 17th century.

The Author: Benedetto Perazzo (17th century) was a Venetian man of letters, little-known today but representative of the baroque literary culture of Italy. His works interweave moral distichs with humanist learning, reflecting the Jesuit-influenced pedagogical style of the time. He is notable for his attempts to reconcile classical poetic tropes with Catholic orthodoxy.
