Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, rare light foxing and staining, rear inner hinge worn but still tight, name of a previous 1869 owner to the top of the title page dated 1869 - as shown). 
Illustrations: Complete with the 22 full-page Curious Engravings, from the Baron's Own Designs, and 5 Woodcuts by G. Cruikshank including the beautiful colored frontis portrait.

The book: Rare and attractive First Cruikshank illustrated edition of -- The Travels and Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen -- Baron Munchausen is a fictional German nobleman created by the German writer Rudolf Erich Raspe in his 1785 book Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. The character is loosely based on a real baron, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von Münchhausen.

The author: Rudolf Erich Raspe (March 1736 – 16 November 1794) was a German librarian, writer, and scientist, called by his biographer John Patrick Carswell a "rogue". He is best known for his collection of tall tales The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen, also known as Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia, originally a satirical work with political aims.

The illustrator: George Cruikshank (27 September 1792 – 1 February 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience.
