The book: Walden; or, Life in the Woods is Henry David Thoreau’s immortal account of the two years he lived alone beside Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. First published in 1854, the work became one of the foundational texts of American nature writing, individualism, and philosophical simplicity.

Thoreau explores themes of solitude, self-reliance, economy, the natural world, and the spiritual rewards of a life lived deliberately. This late-19th-century British edition by Walter Scott Limited is part of their effort to bring important American thinkers to a wider audience in the UK.

A lovely early reprint—ideal for collectors of transcendentalism, environmental philosophy, or fine Victorian books.

The author: Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) was an American philosopher, essayist, poet, and a central figure of New England Transcendentalism alongside Ralph Waldo Emerson. His writings emphasize the primacy of nature, civil liberty, and spiritual independence. Walden remains his most celebrated work, while his essay “Civil Disobedience” has influenced leaders such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and numerous social justice movements.
Thoreau’s reflections on simplicity, environmental stewardship, and authentic living continue to resonate profoundly today.
