Binding: Attractive and near fine binding finely bound by Bayntun in full
red morocco leather, the covers tooled in gilt with a ruled border. The spine is divided into six panels with gilt-tooled bands and compartments, lettered in the second and third, beautiful tooled turn-ins with a gilt roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In a very good custom cloth bookcase. (Hinges fine, spine morocco labels for the title and the author are slightly worn - as shown). 
Content: Very good content (bright, tight, and clean, some foxing throughout - as shown).
Illustrations: Profusely and beautifully illustrated by James Jack.

The book: Wonderful and Attractive edition of The Myths of the North American Indians in a very nice Bayntun binding!  The myths and legends of the Algonquins, Iroquois, Pawnees, Sioux, and northern and northwestern Indians offer rich insights into the character and beliefs of the tribes that once dominated extensive territories of North America. The distinguished British anthropologist and folklorist Lewis Spence has collected many of the most interesting and compelling of these myths and presented them here according to ethnic grouping.

The author: James Lewis Thomas Chalmers Spence (25 November 1874 – 3 March 1955) was a Scottish journalist, poet, author, folklorist and occult scholar. Spence was a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, and vice-president of the Scottish Anthropological and Folklore Society. He founded the Scottish National Movement.

The binder: George Bayntun was born in 1873 in Bath, England. After an apprenticeship, he began his own bookbinding business in Bath in 1894, binding books by hand with great craftsmanship. Although many binders were using machines in their process, Bayntun refused to use modern techniques.
