Binding: Attractive and very good half morocco leather binding, finely bound by G. Ridgway (hinges fine, overall slightly scuffed -  as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. Upper edge gilt. A beautiful binding!
Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, rare light foxing mainly on the outer edge - as shown).
Illustrations: Beautifully illustrated with 12 charming tissue-guarded color plates and numerous line drawings by the 16-year-old Jacynth Parsons with a prefatory letter by William Butler Yeats praising her artwork. 

The book: Rare First edition of Songs of Innocence with wonderful illustrations by Jacynth Parson.

The illustrator: Jacynth Parson (1911-1992) was born in Northwood, Middlesex. She was the daughter of Karl Parsons designer and maker of stained glass. She received no formal art training but from her earliest childhood 'must have absorbed the visual language of the late Pre-Raphaelites from her father' (Alan Horne). In 1927 the Medici Society put on an exhibition of her 'pictures from the age of 3 to 16' - it was met with considerable success. Apart from Blake she also illustrated a book of poetry by WH Davies and a John Masefield volume. She then illustrated a book of her father's poems for children (Ann's Book), and in the early 1930s produced some charming drawings for Gladys Forbes The Enchanted Forest. She married the architect Dennis Clough and after the birth of a son and a daughter gave up her artistic career, except for illustrations to a series of school 'readers' published by EJ Arnold. Later in life, she retired to North Cornwall.

The author: William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognized during his life, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age. What he called his prophetic works were said by 20th-century critic Northrop Frye to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry led 21st-century critic Jonathan Jones to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced".
