The book: This scarce binding variant, circa-1910 Blackie & Son edition of At the Back of the North Wind, is one of the most visually appealing versions of MacDonald’s beloved classic. The Art Nouveau cover—characteristic of Blackie’s decorative period—features bold floral motifs in gilt and green, making it an exceptional display piece. Internally, the narrative follows young Diamond and his mysterious encounters with the personified North Wind, blending fantasy, spirituality, and emotional depth. The inclusion of both Papé’s richly coloured illustrations and Hughes’s delicate black-and-white drawings greatly enhances the dreamlike atmosphere of the story.
The author: George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish writer, poet, and Christian minister whose imaginative works laid the foundation for modern fantasy literature. Admirers and inheritors of his legacy include C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Lewis Carroll. At the Back of the North Wind, first published in 1871, remains one of his most enduring works, praised for its mixture of moral tenderness, wonder, and allegorical depth.
The illustrators: Frank C. Papé (1878–1972), celebrated for his elaborate and expressive book illustrations, contributes four full-colour plates that bring MacDonald’s world to vivid life. His art is known for its elegance, movement, and finely balanced emotional tone. Arthur Hughes (1832–1915), a pre-Raphaelite-associated artist and frequent illustrator for MacDonald, provides numerous black-and-white drawings throughout the volume, distinguished by their delicacy, warmth, and narrative subtlety.
