The book: This beautiful Victorian edition celebrates the life of Grace Darling (1815–1842), the daughter of a lighthouse keeper who achieved national fame when, in 1838, she courageously rowed out with her father through stormy seas to rescue survivors from the wreck of the Forfarshire. Her bravery inspired countless poems, ballads, and memorials, and she became a Victorian heroine. This edition, richly illustrated, offers not only her biography but also vivid depictions of Northumbrian coastlines, castles, and maritime perils. A finely preserved example of 19th-century illustrated biography and a fitting tribute to one of Britain’s most celebrated heroines.

The author: Published anonymously by the author of Our Queen, this work blends Victorian moral storytelling with patriotic biography. The anonymous writer frames Grace Darling’s heroism within a broader context of duty, Christian devotion, and the perils of seafaring life in 19th-century Britain.
