The book: A highly desirable first illustrated edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s Histoires extraordinaires and Nouvelles histoires extraordinaires, presented here in the celebrated French translations by Charles Baudelaire, whose work was instrumental in shaping Poe’s reputation in Europe.

Published by A. Quantin in 1884, this edition is particularly sought after for its rich illustrative program, bringing visual depth to Poe’s haunting tales. This set is further elevated by a striking later mosaic binding, transforming the volumes into true collector’s objects.

The spine decorations are especially remarkable, with finely executed pictorial inlays evoking key scenes from Poe’s most iconic stories. Combined with the preservation of the original wrappers, this example offers both bibliographical integrity and exceptional aesthetic appeal.

A compelling fusion of literature and craftsmanship, this set stands as a powerful testament to the late nineteenth-century French tradition of artistic bookbinding.

The author: Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was a pioneering American writer whose works defined the modern short story, detective fiction, and psychological horror. His exploration of the macabre, the irrational, and the inner workings of the human mind continues to influence literature to this day.

The translator: Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867), one of France’s most important poets, introduced Poe to the French-speaking world. His translations are celebrated for their fidelity to Poe’s tone and their literary elegance, playing a crucial role in establishing Poe’s international legacy.
