The Book: This Author’s Edition of The Complete Poetical Works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti brings together the full body of verse by one of the foremost figures of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Issued in Boston in 1897 by Roberts Brothers, this edition was edited by his brother William M. Rossetti, who added a substantial preface and detailed notes. It includes celebrated works such as The Blessed Damozel, Jenny, The House of Life, and many shorter lyrics, alongside fragments and posthumously published pieces. The volume’s decorative cloth binding reflects the late Victorian taste for refined, arts-and-crafts influenced design.

The Author: Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) was an English poet, painter, and co-founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His work fused medievalism, sensuality, and symbolism, leaving a profound mark on both Victorian art and literature. His poetry, especially the sonnet sequence The House of Life, is notable for its intense imagery and exploration of love, beauty, and spirituality.

The Editor: William Michael Rossetti (1829–1919), Dante Gabriel’s brother, was a literary critic, diarist, and a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle. His editorial work preserved and promoted his brother’s legacy, ensuring that Rossetti’s poetry reached both scholarly and popular audiences in authoritative collected editions such as this.
