The book: First published in 1910, Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales is one of the most celebrated collaborations between Grace James and Warwick Goble, and a cornerstone of early 20th-century illustrated fairy tale literature. Drawing from traditional Japanese legends and folklore, the stories evoke a world of spirits, samurai, enchanted beings, and poetic landscapes. Goble’s illustrations—among his finest—blend subtle color, graceful linework, and an ethereal sensibility that reflects the Western fascination with Japonisme at the time. The result is a work of quiet beauty and enduring charm, prized both for its literary content and its artistic achievement.
