The book: This charming small-format American edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit was issued by Platt & Munk as part of their popular “Wee Books for Wee Folks” series, a line of attractively illustrated storybooks designed for young children. Produced in a durable cloth binding and accompanied by a pictorial dust jacket advertising other titles in the series, these books were intended as colorful bedtime reading volumes for early readers.

Although inspired by the famous story created by Beatrix Potter, this edition represents a later American adaptation rather than a direct reprint of Potter’s original 1902 book. The story is retold in simplified form and illustrated with newly created color artwork rather than Potter’s well-known watercolors. Such editions helped introduce new generations of children to the character of Peter Rabbit during the early twentieth century and illustrate how Potter’s beloved creation became part of the wider culture of children's publishing.

Early Platt & Munk editions from the Wee Books for Wee Folks series are now collected both for their charming illustrations and as examples of American juvenile book design of the early twentieth century, particularly when preserved with their original dust jackets.

The author: Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) remains one of the most celebrated authors and illustrators of children's literature. Her Peter Rabbit stories, first published in 1902, combined delicate watercolor illustrations with memorable animal characters whose adventures captured the imagination of readers worldwide. Potter’s books have sold millions of copies and remain among the most enduring classics of children's literature.
