The book : Attractive and Uncommon Nister's miniature set. Each of the six volumes has four colour plates and line drawings in text. Five of the six vols state 'Nister & Co. No. 1396. Designed in England, Printed in Germany'; the sixth, 'A Birthday Present' states 'London, Ernest Nister; New York, E. P. Dutton & Co; .Printed in Bavaria' and has floral endpapers where the others have plain. 'A Birthday Present' is also the cleanest and brightest of the six vols, the others having varying degrees of wear and soiling to wraps, browned pages and rusting staples. No inscriptions to any of the books. A rare find in any condition!

The publisher : Ernest Nister (1841–1906) was a publisher and printer of movable books for children and paper ephemera such as greeting cards, post cards, and calendars. He was born in Darmstadt, Germany and later had an office in London. He refined the techniques used in the design of "magic windows," "dissolving picture," and pop-up books, publishing them from his firm based in Nuremberg, a toy-making center of the nineteenth century.
