The book: A charming and increasingly scarce first edition of this Victorian juvenile collection, distinguished by its striking publisher’s binding and its lively colour-printed illustrations.
Tommy and His Broom opens the volume with a vivid urban winter scene, setting the tone for a series of moral and adventurous tales typical of the period. The stories—ranging from domestic episodes to scenes of danger and heroism—reflect the didactic yet engaging style that made such works popular with young readers in the late 19th century.
Scarce in commerce, especially in such well-preserved condition, this is a fine example of Victorian illustrated children’s publishing.
