The book: Attractive and rare first edition of this wonderful facsimile reproduction of an original manuscript with calligraphic text and colored illustrations and wood-engraved decorative borders to every page. The original manuscript was created by Richard Doyle in 1842, at the age of 18. After his death in 1883, it was sold at Christie, Manson & Wood, "when, being amongst the most beautiful and highly-finished of his productions, it naturally realized a long price, and the purchaser lent it to the Publishers for reproduction". Eyre and Spottiswoode did a fine job and it is a work of great delight!

The author: Richard Doyle (1824–1883) was one of the most beloved Victorian illustrators, renowned for his fanciful style and his long association with Punch magazine. A master of fairy imagery and ornamental design, Doyle created some of the most memorable visual interpretations of classic children’s tales, influencing generations of book illustrators.
