The book: This nice late 19th-century Hurst & Company edition of Poems of Edgar Allan Poe brings together the poet’s essential verse—The Raven, Annabel Lee, Lenore, Ulalume, The Haunted Palace, The Conqueror Worm, and many others—alongside a substantial biographical memoir, offering a Victorian-era perspective on Poe’s tumultuous life.

The memoir and “Biographical Data” section, printed with decorative headpieces, reflect the 19th-century fascination with Poe’s tragic mythos—his genius, instability, and the Gothic aura that still surrounds his reputation today. This edition stands as a late-Victorian celebration of Poe’s poetry, intended both as a readable anthology and as a keepsake volume.

The author: Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) remains one of America’s most influential literary figures: poet, critic, editor, and father of the modern detective story. His poetic voice—melancholic, musical, and richly symbolic—reshaped the imaginative landscape of 19th-century literature.
Works like The Raven, Annabel Lee, and Ulalume explore themes of loss, longing, mortality, and the supernatural, combining emotional intensity with meticulous rhythmic craftsmanship.
Poe’s impact on European Symbolists, French Decadents, and modern psychological fiction is immeasurable. He continues to be read, studied, and admired worldwide.
