The book: This beautifully produced French edition of Les Mille et Une Nuits presents the celebrated Eastern tales in an adaptation specially prepared for younger readers, following the tradition of Antoine Galland’s influential translation. Issued by Émile Guérin, a publisher renowned for high-quality illustrated books, the volume stands out for its striking oriental binding and its carefully executed engravings. The visual program by H. Grobet enhances the narrative atmosphere with dramatic and imaginative scenes drawn from the most famous episodes of the collection. A fine and highly decorative example of late nineteenth-century French book production.

The author: The Thousand and One Nights is a collective work of Middle Eastern origin, shaped over centuries through oral and written traditions. Its stories, framed by the legendary figure of Scheherazade, have profoundly influenced Western literature, art, and imagination since their introduction to Europe in the early eighteenth century.

The illustrator: Henri Grobet was a French illustrator active in the second half of the nineteenth century, known for his detailed engravings and narrative compositions. His work on Les Mille et Une Nuits reflects the period’s fascination with Orientalism and demonstrates a strong command of line, atmosphere, and dramatic storytelling.
