The book: This First Edition of My Own Fairy Book (1895) by Andrew Lang is a charming volume that continues his celebrated engagement with folklore, fairy tales, and romance. Unlike the Fairy Books of Many Colors, this work combines Lang’s original fairy tales — including the adventures of Prince Prigio and his son Ricardo — with his creative adaptations from Scottish history and legend, such as The Queen of Faery.
Lang’s fertile imagination bridges classical fairy tale elements with satire, romance, and wit. This edition, adorned with illustrations by Gordon Browne and others, captures both the whimsy and the gravitas of Lang’s writing.
The author: Andrew Lang (1844–1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, anthropologist, historian, and literary critic. Today, he is best remembered for his Fairy Books — twelve famous collections that preserved and popularized folk tales from around the world. In My Own Fairy Book, Lang turns storyteller in his own right, weaving together satire, romance, and fantasy.
The illustrators: Gordon Browne (1858–1932) was one of the most prolific illustrators of Victorian and Edwardian children’s books, noted for his lively and detailed style. Alongside T. Scott and E. A. Lemann, his contributions to this edition enrich the text with vivid interpretations of Lang’s imaginative world.
