The book: A handsome early Partridge edition of To Win or To Die, G. Manville Fenn’s gripping tale set during the Klondyke (Klondike) gold rush of the late 1890s. Combining frontier hardship, treacherous landscapes, and tests of loyalty, the novel reflects the era’s fascination with northern adventure and its harsh realities. Fenn’s storytelling — richly supported by Paul Hardy’s vigorous illustrations — offers both action and moral resolve as his young protagonists confront storms, avalanches, thieves, and the unforgiving demands of gold country.

Though copies of this title appear in various bindings, this pictorial cloth issue is particularly desirable for its bold and evocative cover art, capturing the spirit of endurance at the heart of the narrative.

The author: George Manville Fenn (1831–1909) was one of the most prolific and popular writers of boys’ adventure fiction in the late Victorian era. His novels spanned exotic locales and dramatic historical settings, combining plot-driven excitement with themes of perseverance, courage, and ingenuity. Fenn’s vivid storytelling made him a staple of youth literature and a defining voice of illustrated adventure fiction around the turn of the century.

The illustrator: Paul Hardy (1862–1942) was a celebrated British illustrator renowned for his dynamic action scenes, expressive character work, and atmospheric depictions of heroic adventure. His illustrations for Fenn capture both the danger and the grandeur of the Klondike landscape. Hardy’s ability to dramatize physical struggle and peril makes his plates a highlight of this edition.
