The book: A rare and collectible 1908 edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published by The Reilly & Britton Co. of Chicago. This volume holds special importance as the first John R. Neill illustrated edition of Carroll’s classic. Unlike complete text editions, it is abridged, containing only the opening chapters of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland together with the Humpty Dumpty episode from Through the Looking-Glass.

Its vivid pictorial binding, decorative endpapers, and Neill’s colorful, imaginative illustrations make this edition a highly desirable artifact for collectors of both Carrolliana and early American illustrated books.

The author: Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832–1898) redefined children’s literature with his playful narratives, inventive logic, and dreamlike imagery in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871). His works continue to inspire illustrators and readers across the world.

The illustrator: John R. Neill (1877–1943), best known as the principal illustrator of L. Frank Baum’s Oz series, became one of the most influential children’s book artists of the early 20th century. His dynamic linework and Art Nouveau sensibilities set him apart from his contemporaries. This 1908 edition represents his first illustrated interpretation of Alice, blending Carroll’s fantastical world with Neill’s distinctly American style.
