The book: A charming early 20th-century illustrated edition of Black Beauty, first published in 1877. This Platt & Munk edition, dating from 1911, features a series of richly colored plates that bring to life Anna Sewell’s beloved tale of kindness, cruelty, and compassion in the treatment of animals. The eye-catching dust jacket, still present, is an increasingly uncommon survival. The bright pictorial cloth makes this an excellent display copy for collectors of animal stories or vintage children’s literature.

The author: Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was a British novelist best known for Black Beauty, her only published work. Written during the last years of her life, the novel is a timeless narrative that combines autobiography and moral instruction. Sewell intended her work to encourage the ethical treatment of horses, and it has remained one of the bestselling books of all time.
