The author: Johnny Gruelle (1880–1938) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and children’s author best known for creating Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. Inspired by a handmade rag doll belonging to his daughter, Gruelle developed the characters into a hugely successful series of books beginning in 1918. His works combine simple moral lessons with imaginative fantasy, and his distinctive, soft-lined illustrations became iconic in American children’s literature.
