The book: Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market (first published 1862) is one of the most enduring poetic works of the Victorian period — a tale at once fairy-tale, allegory, and richly symbolic narrative of temptation, redemption, and sisterly love. This circa 1933 First U.S. Edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham captures the height of the Golden Age of Illustration in America, pairing Rossetti’s haunting verse with Rackham’s fantastical and often unsettling imagery. Rackham’s goblins, brimming with grotesque humor and menace, and his sensitive portrayals of Laura and Lizzie, bring this dreamlike poem vividly to life.

The author: Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894), sister to Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was one of Victorian England’s most celebrated poets. She is remembered for devotional and children’s verse as well as deeply symbolic poetry. Goblin Market remains her most famous and widely read work.

The illustrator: Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was one of the leading figures of the Golden Age of Illustration. Famed for his ethereal color plates, masterful pen work, and imaginative vision, Rackham illustrated works by Shakespeare, Grimm, Carroll, and Barrie. His edition of Goblin Market holds a special place in his oeuvre as it represents his first U.S. illustrated interpretation of Rossetti’s poem, blending his gift for the fantastic with the moral weight of Rossetti’s verse.
