The book: First published in the late sixteenth century, Breve Instruttione de' Confessori is an influential manual for confessors written during the era of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Intended as a practical guide for clergy administering the Sacrament of Penance, the work addresses the theological, moral, and pastoral responsibilities of the confessor while offering detailed guidance on the examination of conscience, sin, absolution, and spiritual discipline. The text reflects the renewed emphasis on clerical education and doctrinal uniformity that followed the Council of Trent. Printed in Ferrara in 1584, this edition was issued by the respected printer Giulio Cesare Cagnacini and represents a fine example of Italian ecclesiastical printing from the Renaissance period. Surviving copies in contemporary vellum are increasingly scarce and highly desirable among collectors of early theology, Catholic history, and sixteenth-century printing.

The author: Bartolomé de Medina (1527–1580) was a Spanish Dominican theologian and one of the most influential moral thinkers of the late Renaissance. A professor at the University of Salamanca, he played a significant role in the development of Catholic moral theology and is widely remembered for formulating the principle of probabilism, a doctrine that profoundly influenced subsequent theological and ethical thought. Medina's writings were widely disseminated throughout Catholic Europe and remained important reference works for generations of clergy. His practical and systematic approach to pastoral questions made his manuals especially valued during the Counter-Reformation, when the Church sought to strengthen clerical formation and pastoral care.
