The book: A scarce and uncommon 17th-century Mathematics book by the Jesuit Pierre Gautruche. Contents: 1. Arithmetica, 2. Elementale Geometriæ, 3 Sphæra Mundi, 4 Chronologia, 5 Gnomica, 6 Sphæra Terrestris, 7. Optica, 8 Musica.
The author: Pierre Gautruche (Orleans 1602- Caen 1681), Jesuit, professor of philosophy, theology and mathematics. He joined the Company of Jesus in 1621. He studied in Rennes, then was sent in 1642 to the college of Mont in Caen. He taught philosophy there for two years, then he was sent to the college of La Flèche. He returned to the Collège du Mont in 1653 as prefect of studies and professor of theology, from 1668, also of mathematics. He ceased his activities in 1679.
