The book: Rare and very attractive 17th-century edition of Publius Papinius Statius' works including his famous Thebaid and the Silvae. Contains the five books of the Sylvarum (Silvae), 12 books of the Thebaidos (Thebaid), and two books of the Achilleid (two books were all that he completed). All are Roman poetry. The Silvae consists of flattery of the Emperor, descriptions of the villas and gardens of friends, gifts provided by the Emperor for the Romans at holiday, and other poetry; the Thebaid is an epic about the assault of the seven champions of Argos against Thebes, and the Achilleid is about the life of Achilles.  "It is not only beautifully printed... but it is a rare, accurate, and valuable production"!

The author:  Publius Papinius Statius (c. 45 – c. 96 AD) was a Roman poet of the 1st century AD (Silver Age of Latin literature). His surviving Latin poetry includes an epic in twelve books, the Thebaid; a collection of occasional poetry, the Silvae; and an unfinished epic, the Achilleid. He is also known for his appearance as a guide in the Purgatory section of Dante's epic poem, the Divine Comedy.
