Binding: Attractive and very good original full vellum binding, with decorative gilt stamping, including an unidentified coat-of-arms on each panel (hinges fine, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown, gilt faded - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover.
Content:  Very good content (bright, tight and clean, rare light foxing or staining - as shown).
Illustrations: Complete with the illustrated title page and the 12 beautiful engraved plates, each representing an emperor and the medals and coins current with his reign.

The book:  A cherished and monumental variorum edition in the original Latin of Suetonius's works, containing the commentaries of the great Dutch classical scholars J.F. Gronovius (1611-71), J.G. Graevius (1632-1703), and Karl A. Duker (1670-1752), as well as Franz van Oudendorp (1696-1761), who was responsible for this publication. Includes the scandalous Lives of the Twelve Caesars, from Julius Caesar to Domitian, and "De illustribus grammaticis et rhetoribus" (Lives of Famous Scholars), along with biographical portraits of Terence, Horace, Lucan, Pliny the Elder, Juvenal, and Persius.

The author: Caius Suetonius Tranquilus (c. 69 AD – after 122 AD), commonly known as Suetonius, was a prominent Roman historian. He is best recognized for his work "De Vita Caesarum" (The Lives of the Caesars), which provides a unique glimpse into the lives and reigns of the first twelve Roman emperors.
