The books: First edition, first issue, of one of Sir Walter Scott’s most atmospheric historical novels, set in the Orkney and Shetland Islands and drawing deeply on Norse legend, maritime folklore, and Gothic romanticism. This is the true first issue, distinguished by the well-known textual point with “their” instead of “there” on line 20, page 17, Volume II. Offered here as a complete set of three volumes, preserved in handsome contemporary bindings, this edition represents the earliest published form of the text and is increasingly scarce in original condition.

The author: Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) was one of the most influential literary figures of the nineteenth century and a pioneer of the historical novel. His Waverley novels reshaped popular fiction by blending historical realism with romance, regional identity, and psychological depth. The Pirate (1822) stands apart within his oeuvre for its stark northern setting and darker, more elemental tone, reflecting Scott’s fascination with oral tradition and the lingering presence of myth within history.
