Binding: Attractive and very good, near fine beautiful binding finely bound by Bayntun in green stained straight-grained goat-skin with 5-banded spine with gilt-decoration, double gilt filet outside with a scallop design inside, decorative gilt corners; all edges stained and speckled; inside dentelles; marbled endpapers; free front endpaper stamped "Bayntun, Binder, Bath, Eng." (hinges fine, spine slightly sunned) under a protective removable mylar cover. A beautiful set!
Content: Very good content (bright, tight, and clean some light foxing or staining - as shown).
Illustrations: Scarce with 2 hand-colored frontispiece. Volume 1 complete with the 7 illustrations, The Battle of the Pyramid being bound at page 35 instead of 135. Volume 2 complete but a usual, the Charge of Cossacks announced is a duplicate already included in volume 1 at page 358. Collated complete and beautiful!

The Author: John Gibson Lockhart (12 June 1794 – 25 November 1854) was a Scottish writer and editor. He is best known as the author of a biography of his father-in-law Sir Walter Scott, which has been called the second most admirable biography in the English language, after Boswell's Life of Johnson. Lockhart undertook the editorial supervision of Murray's Family Library, which he opened in 1829 with a History of Napoleon.
