Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a prominent French military and political leader during the French Revolution. He rose to power in a coup in 1799, later declaring himself Emperor in 1804. His rule brought substantial, widespread reforms to many sectors of society, including the law (the Napoleonic Code), education, and administrative structures. Napoleon is most remembered for his role in the wars named for him, the Napoleonic Wars, and for his establishment of a dominion over much of Europe. His ambitious attempts for expansion eventually led to his downfall. Exiled twice, he died on the island of Saint Helena in 1821.
