The book: A charming and handsomely bound by Riviere-Bayntun illustrated 1832 edition of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe’s enduring adventure tale. With its full complement of steel engravings by Henry Corbould and a thoughtful memoir by the Reverend Stebbing, this edition captures the novel’s spirit of resilience, exploration, and faith. The beautiful binding and clear typography make it a desirable copy for collectors of early 19th-century illustrated classics.

The author: Daniel Defoe (1660–1731) was a pioneering English writer and journalist, best known for Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719. Often considered one of the first English novels, Crusoe’s fictional autobiography of shipwreck, solitude, and self-sufficiency became a cornerstone of adventure literature and a cultural icon of individualism and colonial-era narrative.

The illustrator: Henry Corbould (1787–1844) was a British artist and illustrator renowned for his classical taste and meticulous line work. His illustrations often drew from ancient art and sculpture, lending a neoclassical refinement to literary subjects. In this edition of Robinson Crusoe, Corbould’s engravings balance romantic imagination with historical sobriety, reflecting the enduring appeal of Defoe’s narrative across generations.
