The Author: Spencer Wallace Cone (1819-1888) soldier, lawyer, poet, was born May 25, 1819, in Alexandria, Va. At the opening of the Civil War, he organized the sixty-first New York regiment, and became its colonel, serving through the war, at the close of which he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He was the author of a small volume of poems; one of the fairy tales; and with his brother, a memoir of their father. He died Jan. 21, 1888, in New York City.
