The author: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882) was an American poet and educator, one of the most renowned figures in 19th-century American literature. Known for his lyric poetry which often presented American history and mythology in a romantic light, Longfellow's works, including "The Song of Hiawatha" and "Paul Revere's Ride," have become staples of American literature. Sir John Gilbert (1817–1897), the illustrator, was an English artist, well known for his works in illustration and painting, contributing greatly to the visual representation of Victorian literature.
