The book: Originally published in 1847, The Princess is one of Tennyson’s most intriguing narrative poems—an imaginative, gently satirical exploration of women’s education, gender roles, and romantic idealism in the Victorian age. The poem’s lyrical interludes, some of Tennyson’s finest, include “Sweet and low,” “Home they brought her warrior dead,” and “Tears, idle tears.”

This 1869 Strahan edition—preserved in a sumptuous full morocco binding—reflects the Victorian love of fine poetry books and bespoke bindings. Despite the minor darkening to the lower spine, the gilt remains bright and ornate, giving this copy a distinguished presence on the shelf.

The author: Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892), Poet Laureate of Great Britain and one of the towering figures of Victorian literature, is celebrated for the musicality of his verse, emotional resonance, and philosophical depth. His works—In Memoriam, Idylls of the King, Ulysses—remain foundational to English poetry. The Princess represents a transitional moment in his career, blending social commentary with narrative charm and some of his most beloved lyrics.
