The author: Catherine "Kate" Greenaway (17 March 1846 – 6 November 1901) was a Victorian children's book illustrator and writer. Her quaint, nostalgic illustrations of children, captured in idyllic settings, earned her worldwide acclaim. Greenaway's work had a significant influence on children's illustration and she remains a celebrated figure in the history of children's literature.
This is the first edition of Kate Greenaway’s “Under the Window: Pictures and Rhymes for Children.” It includes most first-state points, like the illustrations on pages 21, 35, and 63, which were later removed, but lacks "End of Contents" on page 14. Published in 1878, despite being undated, the bookmarked Greenaway’s debut as an author. Vic Zoschak noted in his article “Kate Greenaway: Legendary Illustrator of Children’s Books” that the book was an instant success, selling around 150,000 copies and being published in French and German. Greenaway, one of the era's most influential illustrators alongside Randolph Caldecott and Walter Crane, revolutionized children's book illustration. The Kate Greenaway Medal, awarded annually since 1955, honors her excellence in children’s illustration.
