The book: A beautifully preserved 1886 edition of The Brownies and Other Tales by the beloved Victorian children’s author Juliana Horatia Ewing. This charming volume collects some of her most whimsical and moral tales, including the titular story “The Brownies,” which inspired the name of the Girl Guides’ junior division. The other stories explore themes of kindness, imagination, and wonder. Enhanced by George Cruikshank’s endearing and comical illustrations, this book is a treasure of 19th-century children's literature.

The author: Juliana Horatia Ewing (1841–1885) was one of the most respected children’s writers of the Victorian era. Known for her ability to combine realism, religious instruction, and fantasy, her works remained popular long after her death. The Brownies and its associated stories are among her most lasting contributions to children's literature.

The illustrator: George Cruikshank (1792–1878) was a prominent British caricaturist and illustrator best known for his work with Charles Dickens (Oliver Twist) and for his vivid, humorous, and often satirical style. His illustrations in this volume perfectly complement Ewing’s imaginative narratives and bring the stories vibrantly to life.
