The illustrator: Lizzie Lawson (1867–1905?) Primarily a designer of children's illustrations, Elizabeth Lawson, was born in Dunfermline, Scotland. She was the daughter of John Lawson who was a successful illustrator, painter and sculptor. By 1881 she was a working artist in Chelsea and collaborated with her father illustrating popular children's books and annuals. In 1886 she married the writer and editor Robert Ellice Mack who also worked with her and her father, producing a number of books. By the end of the 1800s she had moved to Scotland when her husband was assigned a post in Edinburgh with the Scottish publisher, Nelson’s. Lawson was a prolific illustrator, having worked on over forty books. Many of her works are of children in varied settings, executed with an innocent and carefree charm. Towards the end of her life, Lawson was living in reduced circumstances. The date of her death is not certain, and it has even been said that she was living at Bath in 1916.
