The books: The Earthly Paradise is William Morris’s monumental narrative poem, inspired by classical mythology, medieval romance, and seasonal cycles. Structured around the months of the year, the work unfolds as a sequence of retold legends and original verse, framed by a group of wanderers seeking a land free from death. This 1893 Author’s Edition, published in Boston by Roberts Brothers, presents the poem in its mature form and reflects Morris’s vision of poetry as a living, moral, and aesthetic force.
Issued in three seasonal volumes—Spring–Summer, Autumn, and Winter—this edition emphasizes the cyclical structure at the heart of the poem. The restrained yet elegant cloth bindings align closely with Morris’s ideals of craftsmanship, harmony, and permanence, making the set particularly appealing to collectors of Arts and Crafts–era literature.

The author: William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the central figures of the Arts and Crafts movement, a poet, designer, printer, and social thinker whose influence extended across literature, decorative arts, and political philosophy. In The Earthly Paradise, Morris brought together his love of medieval storytelling, classical myth, and richly patterned language, creating one of the most ambitious poetic works of the Victorian period.
