Binding: Attractive and very good contemporary navy blue full calf binding bound by BICKERS and Son, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine (overall slightly worn and scuffed, light marks to boards) under a protective removable mylar cover.

Illustrations: Illustrated with 11 full page plates, including a frontispiece, and numerous in-text illustrations by Moyr Smith.

The author: Peter Christen Asbjørnsen (15 January 1812 – 5 January 1885) was a Norwegian writer and scholar. He and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe were collectors of Norwegian folklore. They were so closely united in their lives' work that their folk tale collections are commonly mentioned only as "Asbjørnsen and Moe"
The illustrator: John Moyr Smith (12 March 1839 – 1 December 1912) was a British artist and designer, noted for his work on ceramic tiles.
Smith was born in Glasgow. An example of his work is the interior of the Great Hall of the former Holloway Sanatorium, now in Virginia Park, an exclusive housing development near Virginia Water, Surrey, England.
