Binding: Attractive and good to very good beautiful gilt decorated full red morocco leather binding, finely bound by Ramage bindery with central "N" below a crown (Napoleon symbols), one concentric gilt-ruled rectangle with bee vignettes at each corner in gilt (front hinge cracked on 1" but still tight, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. All edges gilt.
Content: Very good content (tight, and clean, some light foxing and staining - as shown, nice ex-libris of a previous owner on the first endpaper - as shown).
Illustrations: Complete with the nine illustrations in 'permanent photography' and the numerous engravings on wood.
The book: Beautifully illustrated 19th-century edition in a wonderful Ramage binding of The Life of NAPOLEON.
The author: John Gibson Lockhart (12 June 1794 – 25 November 1854) was a Scottish writer and editor. He is best known as the author of the seminal, and much-admired, seven-volume biography of his father-in-law Sir Walter Scott: Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott, Bart.
The binder: Born in London in the mid 19th century, John Ramage worked with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic after serving an apprenticeship with John Wright. Ramage later opened his own shop in London where his bindings were celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work.
