The book: A charming and beautifully bound English-language edition of Grimm’s Fairy Stories, translated by Beatrice Marshall. This edition contains a fine selection of tales, from beloved classics like Cinderella and The Goose-Girl to lesser-known gems such as Hans Hedgehog and The Earth Manikin. It also features striking images by Henry Austin—adding a visual dimension to these tales that heightens their folkloric drama and moral gravity.

The author: Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, renowned German philologists and folklorists, preserved centuries of Central European oral traditions in their seminal collection of fairy tales. First published in 1812–15, their stories have become foundational in Western children’s literature, often blending the eerie, the magical, and the moral.

The illustrator: Henry Austin was a British illustrator active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his evocative renderings of folklore and adventure scenes. His work in this edition of Grimm’s Fairy Stories brings imaginative realism and a slightly gothic atmosphere to the tales, perfectly matching their tone and thematic richness.
