1910 Rare First Edition - Rewards and Fairies with IF poem by Rudyard Kipling
An important note on KIPLING AND THE SWASTIKA:
The swastika on Kipling’s books is a Hindu symbol of good fortune and well-being, used in Indian culture long before its appropriation by the Nazis. Kipling adopted it through his deep connection to India and ceased using it once it was misappropriated during WWII (see Kipling Society, Michael Smith).

The book: A superbly bound first edition of Rewards and Fairies, a collection of historical and fantastical short stories by Rudyard Kipling, masterfully woven with verse. This edition is of major literary significance for containing the first appearance in book form of “If—”, Kipling’s most iconic and universally quoted poem. Praised as one of the greatest poems in English, "If—" has become a timeless meditation on resilience, integrity, and personal strength. This volume is a literary and cultural milestone, blending myth, history, and moral imagination. Stories such as “Gloriana,” “Cold Iron,” and “Marklake Witches” transport readers into richly imagined historical contexts, each prefaced by evocative verse. The stunning binding and exceptional condition elevate this copy into a true collector’s treasure.
The author: Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature (1907). Born in British India, Kipling’s works explore empire, myth, morality, and the complexities of colonial experience. Beyond his beloved Jungle Book stories and Kim, Kipling’s poetry—especially If——cemented his place as a literary giant of the 20th century.
The illustrator: Frank Craig (1874–1918) was an English painter and illustrator known for his detailed and dramatic visual storytelling. His illustrations in Rewards and Fairies subtly reinforce the historical grandeur and mythic tone of Kipling’s prose.
