The illustrator: Maria Louise Kirk (1860-1930) was born in Lancaster, Pennslyania, on 21st June, 1860. Despite being a prolific and highly talented illustrator, very little is known about her life. She studied art in Philadelphia – at the School of Design for Women, and the Academy of Fine Arts.
