Binding: Very good to near fine original olive green cloth binding, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt to the front board and spine with F. D. Bedford’s pictorial designs. The front cover remains remarkably attractive, with strong gilt and only minor age-related wear. Light rubbing and gentle wear at the extremities. Binding is firm and square. An unusually fresh example of this elaborate and often considerably more worn publisher’s binding. Protected in a removable mylar cover. 
Content: Very good. Exceptionally clean, bright and firmly bound throughout, with only the occasional insignificant spot or trace of age. Contemporary ownership inscription of Ruth W. Newcomb, dated March 28th, 1912, to the front free endpaper, together with small initials beneath. No further ownership markings noted. Pages and illustrations are remarkably fresh for a book of this age, with the wide margins, deckled edges and overall appearance particularly well preserved.

The book: First published in book form in 1911, Peter and Wendy is the definitive prose version of J. M. Barrie’s story of Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow up. From the celebrated opening, “All children, except one, grow up,” Barrie carries Wendy, John and Michael Darling from their London nursery to Neverland, where they encounter the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell, mermaids, Captain Hook and the pirates. Beneath its adventure and fantasy lies the bittersweet theme that gives the book its enduring emotional power: childhood is magical precisely because it cannot last.

The first American edition appeared from Charles Scribner’s Sons in October 1911, the same year as the London edition, and preserves F. D. Bedford’s original visual interpretation of the story. The elaborate gilt binding, pictorial title and finely detailed full-page illustrations make it one of the most attractive early manifestations of the Peter Pan story. Copies surviving in such unusually clean condition, with the gilt decoration still strong and the interior remarkably fresh, have particular appeal to collectors of classic children’s literature and Edwardian illustrated books.

The author and illustrator: J. M. Barrie (1860–1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright whose creation of Peter Pan secured his place among the most influential writers of children’s literature. Peter first appeared in The Little White Bird in 1902 before becoming the central figure of Barrie’s enormously successful 1904 stage play. Peter and Wendy transformed that theatrical creation into the lasting literary form known today, exploring childhood, imagination, memory and the inevitable passage into adulthood.

Francis Donkin Bedford (1864–1954) was a British illustrator and architect whose association with Barrie produced the earliest definitive illustrations for the Peter Pan story. His intricate pen-and-ink compositions combine realism with fantasy, giving Neverland a convincing physical presence while preserving its dreamlike quality. His illustrations for Peter and Wendy remain inseparable from the visual history of Barrie’s masterpiece.
