The book: A scarce and visually enchanting edition of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice tales, combining Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass in one volume. This early 20th-century David McKay publication stands out for its richly colored plates based on Tenniel’s iconic illustrations and its distinctive publisher’s binding featuring a pictorial onlay. A lovely collectible edition that captures the whimsy and surreal charm of Carroll’s fantastical universe.

The author: Lewis Carroll (1832–1898), born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was a British mathematician, logician, and author. His Alice stories revolutionized children’s literature by infusing it with fantasy, satire, and literary nonsense. These enduring works have transcended generations, offering both playful storytelling and deeper philosophical reflections.

The illustrators: Though uncredited in this edition, the illustrations are derived from Sir John Tenniel’s original drawings, here reproduced in color. Tenniel (1820–1914), a master of line and character, defined the visual world of Alice, and his illustrations remain among the most recognizable and influential in children’s literature. This colorized rendering adds a vivid dimension to his classic imagery.
